Porsche has produced some excellent engines, but certain 3.0-litre versions have become known for a potentially expensive problem: bore scoring.

If you own a Porsche Macan, Cayenne or Panamera with one of the affected engines, you may have heard of the issue. But what exactly is bore scoring, and what can you do if your engine is affected?

Which Porsche models can be affected?

The 3.0-litre V6 petrol was fitted to a number of Porsche models.

Models associated with the bore-scoring concern include:

Porsche Macan S – particularly earlier 95B models

Porsche Macan GTS – certain earlier versions

Porsche Macan Turbo – earlier V6 models

Porsche Cayenne S – particularly certain 958 models

Porsche Cayenne GTS – certain 958 models

    Porsche Panamera 4S – certain 970-generation cars

What is bore scoring?

Inside the engine, the pistons move up and down inside the cylinder bores. The cylinder walls need to provide a smooth, well-lubricated surface for the pistons to run against.

Some of the earlier Porsche 3.0 V6 engines use an Alusil aluminium-silicon cylinder-bore system rather than a traditional separate iron liner.

Under certain conditions, the cylinder surface can become damaged. This can leave vertical marks or grooves in the bore, allowing the piston and cylinder wall to wear against each other.

As the problem develops, it can lead to increased oil consumption, loss of compression and potentially serious engine damage.

What are the symptoms?

Bore scoring isn’t always easy to spot, but possible symptoms include:

·         Increased oil consumption

·         Ticking, tapping or knocking noises

·         Rough running

·         Misfires

·         Smoke from the exhaust

·         Reduced performance

·         Engine warning lights

·         Unusual or sooty exhaust deposits

These symptoms don’t necessarily mean the engine has bore scoring, as other faults can cause similar problems.

A Porsche specialist can usually investigate the issue using a borescope, which allows them to inspect the cylinder walls through the spark plug holes. Further tests may also be needed.

Is bore scoring expensive to repair?

Unfortunately, if your car has been diagnosed with scored bores, it’s a very expensive fix.

The engine will need to be removed and rebuilt, with the damaged cylinder bores repaired and other components replaced. Many times, dealerships will only be willing to replace the engine with a new unit rather than repairing.
